Project Summary

HYIPTRAIN project seeks to demonstrate and introduce to the market a cutting-edge hydrogen retrofit kit designed specifically for diesel trains. By substantially reducing the upfront cost of hydrogen adoption and simultaneously improving the performance, it enables the conversion of traditional diesel trains into sustainable, hydrogen-powered counterparts. It not only helps train operators align with the decarbonization goals set by the European Green Deal in a cost-effective manner but also leads to a reduction in NOx and PM emissions, positively impacting air quality in urban areas. The project unfolds over 18 months, involving the completion of 6 major tasks by the consortium companies, DIGAS and Microluch. A diesel multiple unit (DMU) train and it’s internal combustion engine will be retrofitted to hydrogen and by the end of the project will be tested in it’s full operational mode setting an example for all train operators and hydrogen providers in Europe and beyond. The project result will showcase a substantially reduction of the upfront cost of hydrogen adoption in the rail sector and simultaneously improving the performance of hydrogen technology in this sector.
