TEM2 locomotive modernized with NYSMART Dual Fuel system

The first in its kind in Baltics, using LNG as the fuel instead of CNG, but the second dual-fuel locomotive in the region operated by Enefit Kaevandused is almost launched and ready to go. This time it’s TEM2 shunter locomotive. It was modernized at Go Rail’s Iru depot where NYSMART dual fuel system was installed onto the locomotive. The first launch and meters driven on the railroad will be followed by a period of fine-tuning, testing, and certification.

The locomotive was converted to a dual fuel locomotive. It means that the locomotive uses LNG to displace the polluting diesel fuel while maintaining diesel-like performance. While operating in dual-fuel mode, DIGAS’s NYSMART system automatically maximizes the use of inexpensive and clean-burning gas, displacing the diesel while maintaining diesel-like engine safety and performance. This results in a reduction of fuel costs, GHG as well as local emissions for locomotives and on-track engineering equipment. This, in turn, will help the Enefit Kaevandused to reduce their fuel costs by up to 30%, and emit 20% less carbon dioxide as well as 70% less sulfur oxide into the air we are breathing every day.

Although launched, a testing and certification period must be completed before the locomotive is put into service by Enefit Kaevandused. Don’t miss it –  stay tuned here and on DiGas’s social media.
