The first LNG freight locomotive in Baltics is on its way

1/6/2021

Retrofitted Duel Fuel General Electric C36 locomotive

The first LNG freight locomotive in the Baltics and the neighboring region, which was retrofitted at Operail’s Tapa depot with DIGAS’s NYSMART dual fuel system installed on board of the locomotive, was successfully launched. The first launch and meters driven on the railroad will be followed by a period of tuning, testing, and certification.

The locomotive now uses two kinds of fuel, which means that it can be powered by diesel as well as LNG – it will help the rail operator to reduce the fuel costs by 30%, and make the operation more sustainable by emitting 20% less carbon dioxide and as much as 70% less sulfur oxide into the air.

A testing and certification period must be completed before the locomotive is put into service. Stay tuned.
